If you are fortunate have a private dock, routine maintenance can be time consuming! There are quite a few things to keep in mind when it comes to dock maintenance because you want to keep it a safe place for both your boat or yacht and your guests.
The American Society of Civil Engineers recommends routine inspections every five years for concrete, wrapped wood, composite materials and protected steel.
Here are a few Items for you to consider for your dock maintenance checklist.
Routine Inspections Above Water
Your inspection should start above the waterline. Walk your dock and look for the following:
Nails or screws that may be popping out.
Are the boards in good condition or do a few seem loose or possibly rotting?
Do you note any sagging in the boards?
Is there any missing hardware such as nuts, bolts, fasteners?
Are lashing straps tight?
If you shake the dock does it feel secure and steady?
Is your dock clean and free of debris or trash?
Are there any signs of fungal rot or areas that remain wet?
How is the sealant for your dock? Is it time to reseal? Marine environments, especially in South Florida can take a toll quickly on your dock.
Routine Inspections Below the Water
It is best to have a certified diver that is familiar with dock inspections and repairs to to perform the inspection below the waterline but, should you want to do yourself here is what you should look for:
Pilings! From the topside your pilings may look like new but when you get underwater it can be a whole different story. It is extremely important to routinely remove growth from your pilings to maintain their integrity.
Once growth is removed you'll want to inspect all hardware for tightness, corrosion and ensure there is none missing or protruding.
In addition to hardware, check for borer activity. The environment is ripe for boring invertebrates. If any such damage is noted - repair asap!

Currents, recent storms and tides move debris quite quickly and create hazard on the sea floor. So, while you are inspecting your dock you'll also want to be sure your bottom area around your dock is free of debris and hazards. Things to look for include:

Remove Litter
Rope
